Sony Smart Watch 3

3rd September 2014 at IFA 2014 Sony released its third generation smart watch Sony Smart Watch 3 running Android Wear along with SmartBand.

Sony is one of the most valuable electronic manufacturing companies of all time. But since last few years Sony struggles lot to grip into smart phone market with it Xperia Z series. Sony smart phone sales are falling tremendously with a unhealthy UI and high price. Sony decided to siege the new emerging smart watch market with an early entry with Samsung. Sony made its own platform to power their smart watches. As the smart watches work parallel with smart phone to delivery for functionality, the platform was build such that all smart phone with Android 4.3+ are compactable. Still Sony smart watch didn’t work out well as much as Samsung products did.

Thus Sony has to have breaking news to jump back into the smart watch market as lot companies like Pebble, LG with G Watch R and Motorola with Moto 360 came with better products by that time. The smart watch design rule book tells the classic looking products are perfect for sales. But Sony boycotted the rule by going with sporty looking smart watches.

Design

The new Sony Smart Watch has a beautiful brushed stainless steel body, giving a premium touch to the device.  The sporty looking watch strap is made of soft silicon that is swappable with colors black, yellow, pink, white and lime green. Fastening of the watch is similar to Samsung Gear Neo and Gear 2 smart watches. Watch band have a metal buckle with a Sony logo on it that gives a premium look. Unlike most of the recent smart watches (IP67rated), the Sony smart watch is IP68 rated like the Xperia Z series smart phones. The watch have a button on the right side of the display for sleep/wake action. Sony Smart watch 3 is just 45g, lighter than other recent Android wear smart watches like Samsung Gear 2(58g) and Motorola Moto 360(49). It also have a microphone for voice command through Google now.

Display

Smart Watch 3 has a crisp square 1.6 inch Transflective touch screen display 320x320 resolution does a decent job. The display is not so bright to make it visible in a sunny day under direct sunlight. Sony also revealed another wearable device along with Smart Watch 3, SmartBand which has a small e-paper display like Pebble. A fair bezel goes round the display giving it a better look.

Chip

The smart watch have a Quad ARM A7 1.2 GHz processor with in-built 512MB RAM and 4GB internal storage. Sony has put in some high performance hardware to deliver smooth experience. This hardware is good enough to power a car entertainment set seamlessly.

OS

Smart Watch 3 is the first Sony smart watch to run on Android wear platform, Android version specifically to run on wearable devices. Android wear are build for square faces thus making Sony easy to optimize to their device. Android wear where built in such a way to work with Android smart phones for data. With the latest update, wearable got a major capability to partially work as a standalone device. Sony’s Smart watch 3 could run a standalone music player with can be paired to a Bluetooth headset. The new update also bought the capability to use in-built GPS chip readings for application which the Sony smart watch has. The Sony watch is also have a built in NFC chip for easy pairing and more.

Battery

The smart watch has a 420mAh battery onboard promising 2 days of power backup. The device has a normal micro USB port like its predecessor for charging and syncing. The micro USB is a great feature that makes comfortable carrying a single charger for both for watch and smart watch.

Sony had delivered a better smart watch but it’s not the best. Still many issues are still with the Android Wear platform which need lot more improvement to bring to smart watches to the next level.
