Motorola Moto 360

Back at March 18, 2014 Motorola announced Moto 360. The most anticipated Smart phone that was delayed lot to come to market. Moto 360 has changed the face of Smart Watch industry with its intrusive design of all time.

Design

Samsung was the first player in the Smart Watch market but much of its product didn’t work out very with it shabby design with a square screen. When Motorola designed it Smart watch they went back into few decades when round watches came became trendy and even it persist now. Most of the major watch maker still makes a ton of classy round watches. Android wear is made for square faces so the as the initial players Samsung opted square screens for their smart watches but it didn’t look great. Motorola bought Moto 360 as the first round Smart Watch in the market. Motorola scarified many to go for round screen but even before Moto 360 was out in market, people where in love with it.

Moto 360 has a stainless steel body which substituted cheap plastic, making it more premiums. With the stainless steel the watch weighted 49g, lighter than Samsung Gear Live (59g) and LG G watch (64g). Moto 360 is very light than other smart watches out there. The initial watch’s straps made available are made of high quality leather in black and gray, the metal straps will be arriving to the watch later with a slighter higher price. It has a small button on the right side, enables to put the display to sleep/awake and brings to setting on a long press.

Display

The Moto 360 has a 1.56 inch IPS display with 320x290 resolutions which is not a great screen but does its job. The interesting feature is that the screen is round with very small bezel around it. Motorola optimized the Android Wear for square display to fit in it round display. But it didn’t work as they expected. Many text or picture brought to the watch was cut out so as to fit in the screen. The screen isn’t so sharp nor bright which made it tough to use under direct sunlight.

Chipset and Memory

Texas Instrument OMAP 3 is the chip in Moto 360, isn’t a great chipset in market but it does works well for this watch. It had a 4GB on board storage and 512 RAM that can run the device decently.

OS

Moto 320 is powered by Android Wear, a platform from Android specifically for wearable device. The OS is made to run in very low configuration and consume very less power, since both can’t be afforded in a wearable device. The OS running on Moto 360 is the version one of Android Wear which has lot of faults to be cleared. When Google introduced Android to smart phone is was not prefect until Android Jellybean which took almost 5 year for the makeover. Android Wear is already 50 percent ready for the product but still 50 percent perfection should be brought to it. Many problems currently faced by the Smart Phone are because the unfinished platform Android Wear.

Apps

Moto 360 is made to resemble a normal watch but running Android Wear, thus it lacks so many features. The fitness app is buggy and the heart rate monitoring sensor detects the heart rate perfectly. The notification appears more than once which is annoying. The Google cards and many are cut out to fit the display that makes data at a glance in watch difficult. Few apps are available in the Google play store too.

Battery

The Moto 360 carries a 320mAh battery which can roughly last 12hrs with out of the box settings. The battery issue has been a big problem for Moto 360 so Motorola planned for a update to fix it. The recent firmware update did a good job, which made the Moto 360 last for 20hrs from full charge. The update turned off ambient mode which the battery drops to less than 15 percent. The LG G Watch had a bigger battery of 400mAh battery that can last a full day without charging. The Pebble watch could last for days without charging which make it so special. The update also bought Mood light feature into the watch which set the display brightness according to the lighting around you.

Moto 360 comes with a beautiful Qi wireless charging dock. Simply put your Moto 360 into the dock to charge and the display changes to a small clock face with a blue ring around it showing the charging progress. Makes it a beautiful clock near your bed but it’s not a good alarm clock as it doesn’t have speaker in it, instead it vibrates.

Moto 360 is pretty watch to wear but it doesn’t have great features. As Android Wear gets updated the watch will performance well and overcome all the current issues.
